Arnica Montana is a plant that belongs to the sunflower family.  Common names for Arnica are leopard's bane, wolf's bane and mountain tabacco.  Arnica naturally grows primarily in mountainous areas in  Europe.  The plant looks very similar to a dandelion and it is a poisonous plant if eaten.

Herbal Uses For Arnica

Arnica is used for sprain, strains and other aches and pains in ointments.  The plant seems to create an antiflammatory effective.  Arnica is applied externally to aches and pains.  Arnica is generally not take internally because the plant is poisonous.

Homeopathic Uses For Arnica

Homeopathic arnica is diluted.  This application is usually applied externally.  Some homeopathic arnica prepartions may be taken orally since the poison has been diluted.

Homeopathic arnica is used primarily to treat aches, pains and bruises.  The  herbal preparation and the homeopathic preparation generally treat the same conditions.

Research on Arnica

There have been several double blind trials with Arnica Montana in Homeopathy.

Vickers et al., 1998 Randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial of 519 people; 400 completed the study. Homeopathic remedies, including arnica, are not effective for muscle soreness following long-distance running.

Ernst and Pittler, 1998 Systematic review of eight trials. Rigorous clinical trials indicate arnica is not more effective than a placebo; most trials studied use of arnica for tissue trauma.

These 2 trials were of the highest quailty.  Other trials with Arnica exist but many of them had similar results to the trials above.  Many people say that Arnica works for them.

Some trials showed a slightly positive result. A 2007 controlled study looked at homeopathic arnica in patients who had their tonsils removed. One group received arnica and the other placebo. Patients were surveyed afterward; 111 out of 190 patients returned their questionnaires. The arnica group reported slightly lower pain levels than the placebo group.  However, the study was far from conclusive.  The patients stayed in the hospital the same amount of time and took the same amount of pain killers.

The question remains is whether Arnica should be researched in double blind studies?  Is this the best way to measure this homeopathic remedy?  Is the homeopathic remedy effective in reducing soreness, brusing and inflammation?  Let us hear your comments.

I used arnica for bruises, and swelling and found it effective.
I use Traumed more now though.
What potencies were used in the trials?
Were they matched with the individual?

The trials used the following potencies of Arnica. Arnica 30X was used in the runner's trial. Some of the other trials used Arnica 6C and 30C. The remedies were not matched with the individual. Traumed is becoming a popular pain relief treatment. Do you find Traumed to be more effective than Arnica?

Arnica was the reason why I became interested in homeopathy. Back in 1995 I was suffering from very bad migraine headaches. Nothing was helping me and as a single mother and an immigrant I had to work a lot. Being sick all the time was interfering with my life and I would spend most of my days in bed throwing up and not being able to move. So out of desperation, I had tried natural products and one of them was a vial of homeopathic remedy for migraines. It did help a lot and that made me interested in what Homeopathy was. I was advised by the store owner to buy arnica as it was a good remedy to have. When I got home I started to read on the internet about arnica. One of the ailments which arnica was helping was bruising. My son who was seven years old had a big bump on his sheen. he had that for 8 months and he was given some creams by doctors which did not help. The bump was big enough that people would notice and ask him what happened. He injured his leg when he fell on train tracks. Next day when we were sitting in the kitchen and having breakfast I remembered about arnica. i told my son and he wanted to try. He took 3 pellets and then we forgot about it. I do not remember if it was on the second day or third that I remembered about giving him the arnica. We took a look at his leg and both of us were speechless. I got goose bumps on my skin from sudden emotion as it was a "miracle". There was no bump, however now his skin had some redness. That went away in couple of days. Since them we use homeopathic remedies for everything. I took two courses and also involved myself in private studies. Now I study for a diploma in Homeopathy and no longer use combination remedies as at first when I was taking the migraine formula. I prefer classical homeopathy and believe that not everyone can become homeopath. You really need to get deep into the science, be creative, be patient, use psychology, be intuitive and be an artist. I have a long way to go and more I study more I know that I will need to study longer. Homeopathy has been my passion since 1996. This is the best form of medicine as it works along your own defense/balancing system. You do not against it you go with it. When you get the right remedy and you know it and you feel your body responding to it...there is nothing better that that feeling. Curing myself from migraine headaches, allergies and so many other serious diseases gives you the confidence in your own body and your own healing powers within you. The most important thing is to find the right homeopath and be honest and objective when you have your consultation.
