Homeopathy In Africa

Posted by Sanjib Sarkar on Thu, Jan 29, 2009 @ 07:19 PM

Tags: Homeopathy in Africa

I was going through some homeopathy blogs online.  I found a very interesting one that I wanted to comment on.  The blog is Jeremy's Journal From Africa. Well known  homeopath, Jeremy Sherr, with his family is in Tanzania to help treat people suffering from Aids, Tuberculouis and Malaria. Jeremy spent almost 10 years trying to acquire money for aids research and homeopathy.  There is plenty of money for aids research.  However, the mention of homeopathy seemed to close any chance of getting research money.  Jeremy decided to go to Africa to help people since he was not receiving the funding that he hoped for.  The homeopath believes homeopathy may be useful in Africa since it is affordable for most people.  Many people can not afford pharmaceutical drugs in Africa because of the high costs.

The skeptic community has discovered what he is doing in Africa.  They were quite critical of his work. He was accused of telling current patients not to take allopathic drugs. However, the homeopath has said he has never told anyone to stop taking their current medication.  Homeopathy was never offered as an alternative to allopathic drugs.  He is also not involved in any research at the moment.  This contrary to what skeptics and big pharmaceutical are saying.   If there was research to be done, the trials would be of the highest quality and highly ethical.

Skeptics called his work dangerous and deillusional.  Jeremy replied back by saying big pharmaceuticals were not getting enough medicine to the people and these medicines did not cure the problems.

So far, the homeopaths results have been impressive. His lastest journal entries seem to suggest improvement in his patients.  A current patient with reoccuring Tuberculouis has been treated with Mercurius Solubilis 30C.  After one week of taking this remedy, the patient is significantly better.  Many of the patients symptoms have gone away all together.

Another patient with aids has been experiencing malaria attacks.  She feels terrible and has had some major headaches with terrible body aches and pain.  After one month of treatment with Androctonus 12C daily, the patient showed significant improvement.  The terrible headaches were gone.  The patient felt significantly better than before.

Jeremy definitely want to thank  big pharmacetical companies and skeptics.  They have made his work get into the news.  His blog and work is becoming popular thanks to the hysteria created when they found out about his work.

You can read Jeremy's blog with the link below.

Why is big pharma not providing enough medicine in Africa?  If they are not providing enough medicine, why are they against someone coming in to offer an alternative solution.  Anything is better than nothing.

Homeopathic Trials with ADHD

Posted by Sanjib Sarkar on Fri, Jan 23, 2009 @ 02:07 PM

Tags: Homeopathic Trials ADHD, Homeopathy for ADHD

ADHD is the abbreviated term for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.  This neurological disorder happens in children.  Boys are more than twice as liking to have ADHD than girls.  ADHD may continue on into child hood.  In this disorder, children seemed to not be able to concentrate for any period of time.  Children may also be impulsive and extremely hyper as well.  Hyperactivity may not be present in all children with ADHD.

In this article, we will examine a couple of small trials with homeopathy in treating ADHD.   This first trial was published in the July 27, 2005 online edition of the European Journal of Pediatrics. The trial was conducted with 62 children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).  . The study involved three phases. First children were treated with an individualized homeopathic remedy for their condition.  Only the children with 50% improvement on the  ADHD rating scale were included in the second phase of the study, a crossover trial with a placebo group. Upon completion of the cross over phase, the children were then treated again with their homeopathic medicine in an open label phase.

The homeopathic remedies used during treatment were Calc carb , Sulphur , Chamomilla , Lycopodium , Silicea , Hepar sulph , Nux vomica, China , Ignatia , and Mercurius. Each of the following were used in one case only: Capsicum, Causticum, Hyoscyamus, Phosphorus, Phosphoric acid, Sepia, and Staphysagria.  Progress was accessed monthly with parents.

The results after one year of the study showed that the children taking the homeopathic remedies showed improvement in the second phase while children given the placebo showed no improvement.   Children on the homeopathic treatment continued to show improvement in the cross over phase. After the children given the placebo were allowed to return back to homeopathic medicine, they continue to show improvement.  Researchers concluded homeopathy may help with ADHD but larger trials are needed.

The second trial was a bit larger.  There were 4 trials that totaled 162 participants.  The homeopathic medicine was individualized for each child with ADHD.  Control groups were set up.   Children were either assigned into a homeopathic group or a control group.  After all the data was gathered, the researchers conclude that homeopathy does not seem to treat ADHD effectively.  Researchers noted that further research should be rigorous and optimal.

The following trials showed that children with ADHD may be helped with homeopathy but the evidence is far from conclusive.  One small trial of 67 children showed evidence of homeopathy working.  A larger trial with 167 participants showed no evidence of homeopathic medicines working on ADHD.

Homeopathic Remedies To Help You Stop Smoking

Posted by Sanjib Sarkar on Thu, Jan 08, 2009 @ 11:48 AM

Tags: Stop Smoking, homeopathic remedies to quit smoking

This is actually a homeopathy forum post that someone asked us.  I know many people have a resolution to quit smoking in the new year.  These homeopathic remedies may potentially help someone stop smoking.  I am going to go into some detail about the remedies to help people fight the addiction of cigarrettes.

Tabacum is basically homeopathic tabacco.  It helps with the cravings of tobacco since it is diluted with this same substance.

Caladium is a homeopathic ingredient that favorably influences and modifies the craving for tobacco. It also influences and counters the symptoms of respiratory disturbances associated with smoking.

Nux vomica helps smokers from becoming too irritable when trying to quit smoking.  This remedy also helps with throat issues associated with smoking.

Avena Sativa helps maintain vitality, endurance and stamina.  Smokers lack these traits due to the tabacco affecting their lungs and health.  This remedy helps to restore these to a certain extent.

Daphne helps with insomnia associated with trying to quit smoking.  It also helps with the tabacco cravings.

Plantago helps lessen the tabacco addiction.  This remedy makes your body feel disgusted with smoking the cigarette.

Staphysagria basically helps with smoker's emotional problems.  Smokers may experience depression, violent outbursts, irritability, and suppressed emotions.  These type of emotions are common for people with addiction.  This homeopathic remedy helps lessen these emotions.

People may need a combination of these remedies to help stop smoking.  See a homeopathic doctor to see which remedies you may need.  If you can not see or find a homeopathic doctor, take the single remedies that most closely resemble your symtoms.  Start with a 6X potency for any of these remedies.

Homeopathy 2008 Review

Posted by Sanjib Sarkar on Wed, Dec 31, 2008 @ 12:15 AM

Tags: Homeopathy Review 2008

This article will summarize some of the major happenings in homeopathy in 2008.  Homeopathy has grow in 2008 in most every country around the world.  However, homeopathy has grown under significant attack in 2008.

The National Health Care system in England has made it difficult to fund homeopathy due to pressure from some doctors in England.  Other European countries are also following England's lead.  Doctors say that there is no scientific evidence the homeopathy works and the NHS of England should not fund this type of operation.  Homeopathic doctor referrals in England from general practioners has dropped significantly.

Most researchers point to very little evidence of homeopathy working.  The war against homeopathy has intensified in the United Kingdom.  Professor Edward Ernst and Simon Singh has challenged anyone to show homeopathy works for any condition.  If someone show that it works, they will give the person $10,000 pounds.  No one has yet to take the challenge.  Most homeopaths think of this as a publicity stunt.

A Lancet trial done in 2005 titled the " End of Homeopathy" is what some people have used as their evidence against homeopathy.  The trials showed that homeopathy is pretty much the same as a placebo.  110 trials were compared.  The researchers found the larger higher quality trials to show that homeopathy is the same as a placebo.  This evidence was still being in 2008.  These trials were used as proof for the NHS to cut homeopathy from their system.

However, many other researchers found this trial had many issues including publication bias.  The trial was not suitable for any medical journal to put into their publications.   The conclusion of the Homeopathy Lancet trials is that this data is totally unreliable.  Researchers manipulated the data to reach a preconceived conclusion about these trials.  Conventional medicine showing a greater effect than a placebo or homeopathy was actually not true either.

Many people point to the attack on homeopathy in England as a good thing.  If skeptics, scientists and medical doctors did not perceive you to be a threat, the attacks will not occur.  Lancet trials where data was manipulated is also shameful.  If you are going to use scientific trials against homeopathy, make sure you do them correctly. People will certainly analyze these trials to verify results and figures.

The question becomes have the attacks in 2008 worked.  That is hard to say.  Homeopathy is still growing in England and everyone including medical doctors say this trend will continue.  The attacks may have shunned some people away from homeopathy in the short term.  There is really no evidence that the media coverage or the Lancet trials has prevented anyone from using  homeopathy.  Dwindling homeopathic referrals has not seen less homeopathic usage.

What does 2009 hold?  More attacks on homeopathy is to be expected in my opinion.  Positive news hardly ever makes headlines. Will the growth of homeopathy continue?

Google Trends and Homeopathy

Posted by Sanjib Sarkar on Wed, Dec 24, 2008 @ 01:50 AM

Tags: Homeopathy, Google Trends

Google trends is an interesting tool that shows the search volume on certain words over a period of time.  Google trends tries to predict searches on these words in the future.  Keep in mind that this is a guess.  Google trends is by no means 100% accurate.  The data given is just an assumption on searches for the particular word.

I am going to look at the word homeopathy search volume and try to figure out what these numbers mean.

As you can see from the graph, 2004 had significantly more searches than 2008 on the word homeopathy.  Each year from 2004 showed less searches than the following year.  The trend is showing fewer searches in the future to almost none.

I also ran google trends on alternative medicine, natural products, accupuncture, herbs and each of these were also showing a downward search trend.

People that searched on homeopathy in the past, may likely be searching on more specific information in the future.  This may help explain the trend.  The chances of no one searching homeopathy 10 years from now is very unlikely.  I think you will see more people searching specifically on homeopathy products and remedies in the future and forgo the general search.

An interesting Google trend is the US economy.

Notice how the there was an extreme spike in September 2008 for the word US economy.  There was also another spike at the beginning of 2008 to suggest something was going wrong.  There was pretty much a downward trend until a small upward spike followed by a much larger spike.  The trend would suggest that something major has happened when there is a large spike in Google trends.

The trends in homeopathy should not alarm anyone.  All alternative medicines seem to be following the same search engine trends.   An upward spike in a downward trend would suggest something is very wrong when analyzing Google trends.

What did you think the search engine trends in homeopathy mean?  Do you see in the future no one searching for homeopathy as the trend suggests?  Why are all alternative medicines trending down?

I look forward to hearing your comments.

I would also like to mention happy holidays to all our blog subscribers and readers.
